PROMISES GATE – DIVINE COMEDY – MMK, FRANKFURT / GERMANY

“La Divine Comédie : le Paradis, l’Enfer, le Purgatoire, revisités par des artistes contemporains africains” concept développé dans cette exposition par le commissaire Simon Njami où les problématiques universelles de la Divine Comédie sont rapportées au présent et placées dans un contexte contemporain transnational. Partant de leurs différents bagages culturels et religieux, les artistes prospectent des séquences thématiques de la Divine Comédie. “Passage des Promesses” est une installation placée au Paradis. Elle se compose d’un labyrinthe de miroirs sans tain sur lesquels sont inscrits de brefs extraits des livres sacrés monothéistes ; il s’agit de passages où est décrite la récompense que trouverait un croyant méritant.

« The Divine Comedy: Heaven, Hell, Purgatory revisited by Contemporary African Artists » is a concept developed in this exhibition by curator Simon Njami. It transports the universal issues of the Divine Comedy, into the present and places them in a transnational contemporary context.  Taking their own widely differing cultural and religious backgrounds as a point of departure, the artists examine individual thematic sequences of the Divine Comedy. “Promises Gate” is an installation placed in Heaven. It’s a maze made of one-way mirrors on which is written brief excerpts from the monotheists’ holy books, passages describing the reward that can have a deserving believer.
