Alexandrie revisitée

On connaît l’image mythique d’une Alexandrie cosmopolite et levantine, dont l’œuvre de Durell s’est inspirée et qu’elle a magnifié.

Cette vision brillante du voyageur, l’écrivain Edouard al-Kharrat en renverse la perspective. Son quartier Gheit el-Enab, populaire, loin des ambassades, cet autre monde, c’est celui d’un regard attentif au quotidien. Œil immobile, Edouard al-Kharrat, au travers de la surface du quotidien et la trivialité du détail, scrute l’ombre, la lumière et en dégage la permanence spirituelle et symbolique.

En 1997 en commençant ce travail, je me reconnaissais dans cette esthétique de l’œil attentif et méditatif. Les images sont précises et constituent des points de gravité autour desquelles s’organise la fluidité des récits. Une familiarité avec mon travail et mes préoccupations de photographe évidente et fructueuse.

De son regard et du mien, s’esquissent dans le proche et le lointain, la réalité et la fiction, les images d’une autre Alexandrie qui s’évanouit sûrement un peu chaque jour avec la ville qui se transforme.

Alexandria revisited

We know the mythic image of the cosmopolitan and Levantine Alexandria that inspired L. Durell. He glorified it in his Alexandria Quartet.

This brilliant vision of a traveller is a viewpoint, turned over by the Egyptian writer Edouard al-Kharrat. His popular home district « Gheit el-Enab » far from embassies is a different world, the one of an attentive look to everyday’s’ life. As a still eye, Through the surface of daily life and triviality of details, Edouard al-Kharrat is peering into darkness and light, bringing out the symbolic and spiritual permanence.

I recognised myself in this aesthetics, in this attentive and meditative look when I started this work in 1997. Pictures I have done are like spots of gravity, precise, around what stories can fluently be organised. It was an evident and fruitful familiarity with my concern as photographer.

From his look and from mine, from far away to very close, from reality and fiction, starts a sketching of another Alexandria that is vanishing surely everyday as the city is being transformed.
