Egyptians,
Or Clothes Make the Man

The appearance of a person’s clothing sends a message attesting identity, a way of thinking. Well-mastered, appearance expresses less and less a state of fact and becomes pure communication. The question is: How far can we trust it?

In Egypt, and under cover of a new financial or religious status, opportunists radically and quickly changed their appearance and thereby changed their social relations. We can deduce at best, that each has multiple facets; at worst, that clothes make the man.

In 2010, I started the project by mimicking with my face several male characters from Egyptian society. I made the photos by combing, dyeing and shaving my hair and beard in different ways.

After creating a poster of protest against an attack with these portraits and adding the slogan « All Egyptians », the demonstrations raise Egypt. In Tahrir Square during the sit-in and later, activists displayed and reproduced the poster in large size as a sign of unity and rallying.

This project took a year, started febr 2010 by not shaving my beard. Few months later I started shooting the series; brushing, dyeing and shaving hair and beard at different stages all along the year.
