L'Égypte est un pays moderne !

"Egypt is a Modern Country!" Since a number of years, cities have been changing at a breathtaking speed. The development of the road network through the countryside created around it new housing plots, informal, never really completed, on patches of arable land, although scarce. This led to a new form of habitats; neither urban, nor rural and are shantytowns either. Thus, “new towns” are cropping out in large numbers, with their closed and reserved cities, created in the middle of nowhere, with their own architectural style, malls and leisure centres. Their characteristics is to have as reference globalised standards qualified "modern", more or less assimilated or adapted. They are the pride of those who conceived them, and those who work or live there. The acceleration of the international standardized exchange and the rapid spread of the models are an important factor in this phenomenon. But this search for "modernity", extending to the informal residential areas, is recurrent; it seems like to exorcise the perception that Western world gives of the country; like a consensus to get rid of the image of a “poor-dirty-backward” country. This image, as it is reported and encouraged by the western media, appears to result from a misunderstanding: the Western world is seeking either the exotic, or an "original" reality that it has lost some time ago. The search for "modernity" becomes then a search for an image of the image; just like a mosque copied from a Disney illustration and actually built in a country where the Islamic architecture had flourished centuries ago; or like Cinderella’s sisters who wanted so badly to fit in the shoe and thus become princesses… Without a particular answer, I undertook to make some images of this "modernity". This series of thematic compositions were done of pictures shot in 2006. It was showed at: Musée Henri Martin, Cahors, France (2009) "Le Porte del Mditerraneo" Palazzo Piozzo, Rivoli - Italie (2008) Centro de Cultura Contemporània (CCCB) de Barcelona (2009) Rencontres de la photographieafricaine Bamako - Mali (2007) "GlobaLocal" CCF d'Alexandrie - Egypte (2006) |
